Create a beautiful and customizable blanket with this elegant feather stitch pattern. The design works up quickly and is perfect for using multiple colors of your favorite DK weight yarn.

Abbreviations & Key Terms

  • Ch: Chain
  • HDC: Half Double Crochet
  • Notes: The instructions for the lap size are listed first, with the full size in parentheses ( ). Example: 161(211)
  • Foundation Chain: The starting row of stitches.

Yarn & Sizes

  • Lap Size: Uses 10 skeins (2500 yards) of DK weight yarn and measures 34” x 39”.
  • Full Size: Uses 25 skeins (6250 yards) of DK weight yarn and measures 65” x 75”.

Customization & Gauge

This blanket is completely customizable. You can add more yarn to make a bigger blanket or use less yarn to make a baby blanket, as long as the foundation row is a multiple of 2 plus 1.

No gauge needed. Best worked with a size G (4.25mm) or size H (5.00mm) hook.


Instructions

Foundation Row:
Cast on 161(211) HDC Foundation Stitches (multiple of 2 plus 1).

Row 1: Ch 1, HDC in first st, *ch 1, skip next st, HDC in next st, repeat from * to end. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, HDC in first st, ch 1, work a beginning feather st, *work feather st, ch 1, repeat from * to last st, HDC in remaining st. Turn.

Row 3-12(3-9): Repeat row 2 until you have 11(8) rows of feather stitches.

Row 13-24(10-18): Join in with the next desired color. Feather stitch 12(9) rows.

Continue to feather stitch 12(9) rows of each remaining color.

The final color will only have 11(8) rows of feather stitch.

Final Row: Ch 1, HDC in first st, *HDC in ch 1 sp, HDC in feather st, repeat from * to end, HDC in last st. Fasten off.


How to Work the HDC Foundation Row

  1. Start with a slip stitch.
  2. Chain 2. Yarn over.
  3. Insert hook in second chain from hook. Yarn over and pull through.
  4. Yarn over, pull through one loop.
  5. Yarn over, pull through all 3 loops. You have created your first HDC foundation stitch.
  6. Yarn over. Insert hook into bottom “V” of the first foundation stitch. Yarn over, pull through.
  7. Yarn over, pull through one loop. Yarn over, pull through 3 loops.
  8. Repeat until you have 161(211) HDC foundation stitches. Turn.

Beginning Feather Stitch

  1. Yarn over, insert hook into last ch-1 space of previous row, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on hook (3 loops on hook).
  2. Yarn over, insert hook into ch-1 space below or skipped stitch just worked, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook (5 loops on hook).
  3. Yarn over, insert hook into next ch-1 space, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook (7 loops on hook).
  4. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.

Feather Stitch

  1. Yarn over, insert hook into the same ch-1 space as last feather, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on hook (3 loops on hook).
  2. Yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch or ch-1 space one row below same space, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook (5 loops on hook).
  3. Yarn over, insert hook in next ch-1 space, yarn over and pull up a loop in line with loops on the hook (7 loops on hook).
  4. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on hook.
