This will explain two ways to block a crochet doily. I prefer the starching and pinning method since it gives the doily a crisp and fresh look. Ironing does work well as an alternative. The video tutorial will show both methods.

Pinning Method

• Measure half water and half starch in a bowl. Mix well
• Saturate your doily in the starch solution
• Gently squeeze the excess liquid out of the doily
• Lay the doily out on an old towel
• I recommend stainless steel rustproof pins otherwise there is the chance that standard pins will rust and leave rust marks on your doily
• Pin the doily to surface like a mattress or something to hold the pins in place
• It will take about 24 hours for the lace to dry naturally. You can also use a fan to expedite the drying process.

Ironing Method

• Cover your ironing surface with an old towel.
• Lay your doily flat on the surface
• Spray the doily with spray starch from a can
• Lay the pressing cloth over the doily.
• The pressing cloth will prevent scorching and the iron sticking to the lace. Starch is very sticky.
• Iron the doily with a dry iron.
• The pressing cloth will absorb excess moisture as the cotton sets from the starch and heat.
